THE HYBRID
THE HYBRID is a journey through reclaiming space as an Indigenous-Canadian person and contemplates an individual’s place between cultural identities. “Hybrid” as defined by the Oxford English Dictionary is “the offspring of two animals or plants of different varieties; a half-breed, cross-breed, or mongrel,” which is used as a literal and abstract motif throughout the work. This exhibition is a collection of works by Cree artist, Osa’-wisue Penāsue Iskawoā / Natasha Walter-Pinay, highlighting the struggles and complexities of experiencing and living between that of origin/ethnic identity, and colonial influence/social identity. THE HYBRID brings the faceless parts of individuality to surface through learned traditional Cree teachings of practices and crafts, the duality of colours, and enigmatic settings which provoke the feeling of something being so tangible, yet just out of reach.
